Self-adhesive labels stick best to a smooth, dry, and grease-free surface, which suits most storage containers well. Plastic containers, glass jars, and spice jars all have the kind of flat, blank front that a label will adhere to.

The basic rule is simple: wipe the container thoroughly before applying the label, and avoid sticking it over grooves, edges, or textures where only part of the label makes contact. If your container is fresh from the wash, let it dry completely first. If you need to label both containers and jars, it can be helpful to do it all at once to create a consistent system, whether the dry goods are in a container or a storage jar.

Pre-printed text or write it yourself?

How much you need to write yourself depends on what you put in the containers.
