How storage jars with lids create calm in the kitchen
Do you also have flour in one bag, rice in another, and grains in a third, all folded down and secured with a clip? You are not the only one. Dry goods in their original packaging take up uneven amounts of space, fall over easily, and make it difficult to see what you have and how much is left.
Storage jars with lids solve both problems at once. The glass lets you see the contents immediately, and the lid keeps flour, rice, pasta, grains, coffee, and spices fresh by keeping air and moisture out. At the same time, your cupboards and countertop gain a calm, uniform look because the jars share the same design language and can be lined up in a row.
This collection features both square and round jars in several sizes, all with a wooden lid. Below, you will get help choosing the shape and size, and using the jars so that the system lasts in everyday life. If you want to dive deeper into the basic principles, we have also compiled them in our guide to storage jars.
Square or round jars
The shape determines how well the jars utilize space and how they look together. Square jars stand edge-to-edge without air between them, so they utilize a cupboard or shelf better than round ones. These are the ones to choose if you want as many jars as possible to stand close together and create that calm, uniform line along the shelf.
Round jars have a softer look and are nice to have out on the kitchen counter, where they become a small design element rather than just storage. You can find them in the collection as 'Storage jar with round wooden lid light' 400 ml for items you use in small portions, and 'Storage jar with round wooden lid light' 1500 ml for larger quantities.
If you prefer the square ones, you can see the entire selection gathered under square storage jars. Many people actually combine both shapes: square ones in the cupboard where space needs to be utilized, and a few round ones out in the open where they can also serve as decoration.
Light or dark wooden lid
The wooden lid comes in two tones, and the choice is mostly about what suits your kitchen. The light lid is made of light wood and provides a calm, Nordic look that fits into most kitchens. The dark lid is made of acacia wood with a warmer, more distinct grain, which provides more contrast against the glass and its contents.
If you want the consistent, uniform look that is the whole point of gathering dry goods in jars, choose the same tone throughout. You can see the two series separately under square storage jars with light wooden lid and square storage jars with acacia wooden lid. Wood is a natural material, so each lid has its own grain, and no two lids are exactly alike.
How to choose the right size
The size should match how much you use of each item, so the jar is neither left half-empty nor constantly running out. The square jars are available in 500 ml, 1000 ml, and 1800 ml, and the round ones in 400 ml and 1500 ml.
The smallest, 'Storage jar with acacia wooden lid square 500 ml', works well for what you use in small quantities: baking powder, seeds, bouillon cubes, or a single type of nut. The medium size of 1000 ml typically holds grains, rice, or pasta for daily use. The large one, 'Storage jar with acacia wooden lid square 1800 ml', is for those who buy in large bags: flour, sugar, and oatmeal, where you want an entire bag to fit into the jar at once.
A good tip is to empty a standard bag out and see how it fits before you decide. A regular 2 kg bag of wheat flour fits nicely in the large square one, while a bag of rice often fits in the medium size.
What can you store in the jars?
The jars are intended for dry goods—things that do not need to be refrigerated. Flour, sugar, rice, pasta, grains, oatmeal, muesli, dried beans and lentils, nuts, coffee beans, tea, and spices all belong here. Everything that otherwise lies around in bags and boxes, taking up space unevenly in the cupboard.
The clear glass allows you to see at a glance what you have and how much is left. That is the detail that ensures you are no longer standing in the supermarket wondering if you have enough rice at home. If you need to store spices in smaller quantities, there is a separate series for that specific purpose under spice jars, which are shaped to fit in a drawer or on a shelf. And if the need is instead for leftovers and portions in the fridge, those belong in containers rather than jars, which you can find under glass storage containers.
How to make the wooden lid last longer
The glass itself is dishwasher safe, but the wooden lid must be handled with a little more care, just like a wooden cutting board. Wood and prolonged water in a dishwasher are not a good combination: it can cause the wood to dry out, crack, or lose its color over time.
Therefore, wash the lid by hand with a damp cloth or a quick rinse under the tap with mild dish soap, and dry it off afterwards rather than letting it soak in water. This way, the wood will stay nice for many years. If you want to give dry wood a new lease on life, you can periodically rub a little cooking oil into the surface. The glass, on the other hand, can be rinsed and washed as you normally would.
How to set up a system that lasts
A few jars do not automatically create order in the cupboard. It is the system around them that creates the calm. Start with one cupboard at a time rather than turning the whole kitchen upside down at once.
Take everything out of the cupboard, wipe off the shelves, and take a critical look at what you have: if there is flour that has expired or a bag of grains you never use anyway, now is the time to get rid of it. Then fill the jars with what you actually use, and place the square ones close together so they form a calm row. What you use most often should be at the front and at eye level.
The final step is to put a name on them. With identical text on each jar, you and the rest of the household can find what you need without opening the lid, and the cupboard gets that finished, uniform look. We have labels in the same calm style as the jars. If you want everything gathered from the start, you can see our storage jar package solutions, where jars in several sizes are put together for a kitchen. We promise it is all worth it once the system is created, and if you have questions along the way, we are ready to help.
