How to choose boxes that create calm instead of more clutter
You know the feeling when you open the wardrobe or look under the sink, and things are piled on top of each other without a fixed place. You are not the only one. Clutter arises because things do not have a place to belong, and so they just end up wherever there happens to be space. Storage boxes solve this by giving each thing its own fixed place, so you always know where something is, and can quickly put it back in place. Here you get help choosing the right boxes for your drawers, cabinets, bathroom, kitchen, and attic, so the system lasts in everyday life.
Measure the drawer or shelf before choosing a size
The right size depends on where the boxes will stand, and what they will hold. Therefore, you always start by measuring the width, depth, and height of the drawer, shelf, or cabinet the boxes will go into. Otherwise, you risk buying something that either floats around in a deep shelf or cannot fit.
For drawers, low boxes fit best, so you can look down into them and quickly find what you are looking for. For deep cabinets and shelves, it makes sense to choose boxes you can pull out completely, so the space at the back does not become a black hole where things disappear. And for the attic or under the bed, large boxes with lids are the right choice, because they keep dust out of what you do not use so often.
A good rule of thumb when choosing a size:
- Small boxes for small parts that otherwise clutter, such as batteries, cables, and hair ties.
- Medium-sized boxes for most things in the wardrobe and kitchen cabinet.
- Large boxes with lids for seasonal clothing, extra duvets, and things that need to be stored away.
Boxes that match and can be stacked give a calm appearance
What really creates calm is that the boxes look alike. When you use the same series in several places, the cabinet gets a uniform and aesthetic appearance instead of a mixture of old shoe boxes and plastic bags. The eye rests because there are not a lot of different shapes and colors competing for attention.
Stackable boxes also mean that you utilize the height in the cabinet and not just the bottom. Instead of one long row along the shelf, you can build upwards and get twice as much in the same space. This is especially worth thinking about in deep cabinets and in the attic, where there is often a lot of unused height above the things.
Plastic, wood, or a combination depends on the room
The material should follow the room the box will stand in. Plastic is easy to wipe clean and tolerates moisture, so it fits well under the sink, in the refrigerator, and in the utility room, where splashes and spills easily occur. Our white storage box is a calm, bright choice for cabinets and shelves where you want to hide the clutter behind a uniform front.
Wood feels warmer and decorates where the boxes stand out, for example in the living room, in the office, or on an open shelf. Our lightweight wooden boxes and acacia wooden boxes are made of natural materials, which feng shui highlights as calming, and they come in several shapes, so you can build a system that fits exactly your shelf. Wood tolerates a damp cloth, but should never be left to soak, so it should not be used where it gets really wet.
Open front makes it easy to take things out and in
If the boxes are to stand on a shelf where you daily take things out, an open front is worth its weight in gold. You can reach into the box without first pulling it out completely, and it makes a big difference in the kitchen and in the office, where things need to go back and forth many times a day. Our open front boxes are made for exactly that, and they can be stacked, so you build a small shelf out of them and utilize the height.
For things you touch less often, a closed box or a box with a lid is better, because it keeps dust out and makes it possible to stack more on top.
Start with one room at a time
Many are surprised by how little is actually needed to create an organized home. You do not need to tackle the whole house at once, but can start with one cabinet or one drawer. Often it makes the most sense to start where the clutter bothers you the most in everyday life.
- Take everything out of the cabinet or drawer, so you see what you really have.
- Sort out. What you do not use does not need a box.
- Divide the rest into groups that naturally belong together.
- Give each group its own box and its own fixed place.
Once the system is in place, things almost take care of themselves, because everything has a place to belong. We promise that it is all worth it when you open the cabinet and can just see where everything is.
